“Education's purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one." - Malcolm Forbes
We have decided not only to talk about this semester but also about the three semesters since during these semesters our teacher and our own experiences have in one way or another taught and shaped the way we teach.
The first semester we did not even know about what teaching is or means, and we could not picture ourselves as teachers. Since the first practicum, we learned about the importance of a meaningful learning. Our very young learners taught us patience, creativity, and imagination. They also showed us that it does not matter how old we are, we all have different abilities that can be developed. Also, they made us realize that it does not matter if we cannot read or write, everyone can learn a second language through colors, drawings, flash cards, etc. They gave us the opportunity of having our first teaching experience.
The second semester was totally different since we had an idea of what it is necessary for teaching. Young learners taught us that we cannot only be their teachers but also their friends. They also showed us the importance of fighting for what we want in our life since the energy they posses is extremely important to reach our goals and to overcome all the challenges that can take place during the process of learning. Furthermore, they made us think of the importance of creating rapport, and the necessity of knowing their needs since the most important source are they all.
In this semester, high school students taught us to be more responsible with our work since they have higher expectations. Also, they showed us that energy, happiness, and enthusiasm must be some of the most important ingredients that cannot be lost while learning. It is important to point out that high school students are difficult to control, so we learned to be prepared for the unexpected because if a specific activity does not work, we must be prepared with a plan B. High school students are more demanding and required more attention in the necessities they want to meet for their university challenge they must face later. However, the most striking thing we have learned in this term is that collaborative learning is really important since one student can help another in any area she/he may have lack of knowledge or understanding¸ and vice versa. Also, we could realize that we can have a wonderful interaction between teacher and learners and among students by using both technological tools and traditional classroom activities per se.
