Some may say that a leader is born, but in fact a natural leader is not born but made. Leadership is a really important tool we as teachers have to use because teachers play many roles in the classroom; they become leaders, facilitators, and guides for their students.
We as future practitioners think that we have to be an example for our students; they have to see a leader in us, someone who is naturally prepared to confront any kind of situation even if it is dangerous or involves risks. A good and mature behavior shows the nature of a leader, this is how teachers can gain the trust of their students. As teachers, we are innate leaders and as leaders we have to state a clear vision of what we want our students to achieve and also what we want to achieve ourselves.
Indeed, a clear vision is the key of a successful learning process and a great teaching style. Teachers need to put a boundary between a wish and a vision they can have. For example, a wish of a teacher represents something he/she “would” like to do, while a vision represents something he/she “will” do! They must provide a goal they will reach while teaching a class and share this goal or goals with the students so that they can be aware of what they are required to do.
Leadership and vision are clearly related to each other; this means that a teacher cannot become a real leader while she/he has not stated or prepared a clear and strong vision of what he/she wants to achieve with the students; on the other hand, a leader cannot be made up by fears or prejudices, instead a real guide is the one who takes challenges and takes risks to later see the results in the students learning progress and achievements.
By becoming teachers outside in the real world, we will soon realize of how leadership and vision work together when we put them into practice to fill in all the holes left by someone else in the job we will perform.
